Born in 1940, Monmouth University alumnus Stephen Friedland performs under the name Brute Force. A lifelong singer-songwriter, Friedland began his musical journey a songwriter for Bright Tunes Productions at the behest of doo-wop group The Tokens, who had scored a hit with “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” Friedland joined the band as their keyboard player. For Bright Tunes, Friedland composed the Chiffons’ 1965 hit “Nobody Knows What’s Goin’ On (in My Mind But Me).” He also composed hit songs for Del Shannon, Peggy March, and The Cyrkle.

In 1968, The Beatles famously invited musicians around the world to submit their work for consideration for release by Apple Records. Friedland answered the call with his original composition “The King of Fuh,” which has emerged as one of the most notorious songs in annals of Apple Records history. Against all odds, John Lennon and George Harrison opted to release the song, which tells the tongue-in-cheek story about a monarch toiling in the land of Fuh. Under Harrison’s supervision, the song was overdubbed with a string arrangement composed by John Barham. Given the song’s irreverent nature, EMI (Apple’s parent company) refused to distribute the single, of which only 1,000 copies were pressed. In 2010, more than four decades after its original rejection by EMI, “The King of Fuh” was released by Apple Records on the Come and Get It compilation. Friedland is currently developing a play entitled Color Talk for production.

Joe Jencks is an international touring musician, award-winning songwriter, and celebrated vocalist known for his performances of musical beauty, social consciousness and spiritual exploration. A 25-year veteran of the international Folk circuit, Jencks has released 15 CDs in that time. Merging conservatory training with his Irish roots and working-class upbringing, Joe delivers engaged musical narratives filled with heart, soul, groove and grit. Blending well-crafted instrumentals and vivid songwriting, Jencks serves it all up with a lyric baritone voice.

Attention music lovers! We are proud to announce that Split Level Concerts at Jersey Shore Arts Center is back! All shows in the 2025-26 season will take place at JSAC’s historic Palaia Theater, 66 South Main Street in Ocean Grove.

Jersey Shore Arts Center and Split Level Concerts are proud to be partnering with Brookdale Public Radio - 90.5 The Night and Musicians On A Mission (MOAM) to promote the power of live music. Musicians On A Mission is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating connection and inspiring giving through music so volunteers will be on hand in the lobby at every concert collecting will be collecting donations on behalf of Fulfill. Be sure to bring along non-perishable food items to benefit the food insecure in Monmouth County.

The Shrewsbury Chorale presents the first concert of its 2025-2026 season, “Peace on Earth”, Sunday, December 7, 4:00PM, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 94 Tindall Road, Middletown, NJ. The program will feature “Snow Angel” (2017) by celebrated contemporary Canadian composer Sarah Quartel. Fiona Smith Sutherland will direct. Also on the program will be other music appropriate for a concert in December concert, including 3 varied settings of “O Nata Lux”.

In the spirit of collaboration and appreciation for musical brilliance, we bring you our monthly concert series — pairing tunes from legendary masters of rock, along with some unsung heroes following in their footsteps. Settle in for an intimate vibe akin to MTV Unplugged, Storytellers and Behind the Music, as singer/guitarist Kevin Spyker performs timeless hits and hidden gems, accompanied by an array of instrumentalists from the Belmar Arts music collective.

Reserve your seats for our series launch on May 18th — highlighting the music of rock icon Tom Petty, with an opening set honoring the up-and-coming band known as Dawes...each month we will tribute two different bands.

Between songs we’ll share some history and fun facts about our featured songsters.

We’re honored to name our tribute series after the memorable Dawes song / album “All Your Favorite Bands” with the anthemic refrain:

“I hope that life without a chaperone is what you thought it'd be,

I hope your brother's El Camino runs forever,

I hope the world sees the same person that you've always been to me,

And may all your favorite bands stay together!”

Join Monmouth Civic Chorus for our beloved annual holiday concert, which audiences and musicians agree is one of the most joyous days of the year. This season’s program includes highlights from Handel’s Messiah in Act One and stirring settings of your favorite carols in Act Two. The chorus is joined by an elite professional orchestra composed of some of the country's most in-demand musicians.

For a 14th and final season, Monmouth Civic Chorus will perform under the baton of Artistic Director Dr. Ryan James Brandau, recently hailed by The New York Times as conducting "the gold standard" Messiah.
