Surfer Blood – I Can’t Explain

surferblood_newFounding members John Paul Pitts and Tyler Schwarz started playing music together in Orlando FL. They met Thomas Fekete at an Ultra Music Festival after party in Miami and the group was formed with the immediate goal of releasing a record and touring nonstop. The band was originally called Jabroni Sandwich. Schwarz randomly came up with the name Surfer Blood during a conversation with Pitts about his surfer backpack from High School. The band’s 2009 debut single “Swim” gained much critical acclaim and was named as the 37th best track on Pitchfork’s 100 Best Songs of 2009. They released their debut album Astro Coast in January 2010.
Original guitarist Thomas Fekete left the band in 2015 shortly after the announcement of their third album, “1000 Palms,” due to a medical diagnosis for a rare form of cancer (Sarcoma) that had spread to his lungs and spine. The band announced a fundraising effort to help alleviate Thomas’ medical bills through the site GoFundMe on April 20, 2015. On May 23, Surfer Blood’s van was broken into and robbed in Schaumburg IL. The band wrote on Facebook that in addition to losing “thousands of dollars in personal items and show settlements,” they lost every donation that was collected for guitarist Thomas Fekete at the merch table up to that show. Laura Burhenn's Mynabirds Prep 'Lovers Know' for Summer Release

Mynabirds, the musical moniker for singer/songwriter Laura Burhenn, will explore "new territory" on the new album Lovers Know scheduled for release this summer via Saddle Creek. Burhenn will perform a handful of solo performances at SXSW next week and will hit the road again later this year in support of the new album. From the Press Release: Forging 80s, 90s and futuristic soundscapes, the album gives a nod to Sinead O’Connor, Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, and even 90s hip hop and R&B, Burhenn's brooding, unmistakable voice leading the way. A full year in the making, she drove across the US twice and toured South Africa solo while writing, then spent 8 months in studios in Los Angeles, Nashville, Joshua Tree and Auckland, New Zealand, with producer Bradley Hanan Carter perfecting the songs and sound. It’s a collection of love songs — 12 in all — the most visceral record she’s made to date, guitars searing and drums thumping like anxious hearts...[READ MORE]
