In 1986, "A Door Into Ocean" –winner of the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel in 1987– challenged one of the most basic tenets of humanity's aspiration of expanding to the stars: terraforming. Slonczewski, as a microbiologist*, posed the alternative of altering ourselves, adapting to the new planet we planned to populate, rather than stripping it bare and recreating another earth. Their series, the Elysium Cycle, asks in turn how changing what it means to be human might mean changing both our bodies and our minds.
