TEEN SUED BY MUSIC LABELS FIGHTS BACK
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) – His name may be Robert Santangelo. But the 16-year-old teenager is taking on the role of David in his battle against the Goliath-like recording industry. He is fighting back against a copyright infringement lawsuit that has been filed against him. In response, he is accusing the industry of violating antitrust laws, conspiring to defraud the courts — and making extortionate threats. Santangelo claims he was as young as eleven when the alleged piracy took place. He denies he ever sent music to anyone else. Santangelo is the son of Patti Santangelo, the 42-year-old mother of five who was sued by the record industry in 2005. She refused to settle, took her case public and became a heroine to supporters of Internet freedom. The industry dropped its case against her in December but sued Robert and his sister Michelle in federal court. The daughter has been ordered to pay more than $30,000 in a default judgment because she didn’t respond to the lawsuit.
