NJ governor makes surprise visit to NJ troops
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) – Governor Corzine completes a surprise visit to New Jersey troops in Kuwait and Iraq.
Corzine — a Democrat who voted against the war while in the Senate — lauded the efforts of the troops, but also decried what he called a — quoting here — “pretty threatening strategic environment” that doesn’t lend hope to quickly troop withdrawals.
During the two-day tour that ended yesterday, Corzine met with military officials and with troops from the Garden State. He also held an awards ceremony with New Jersey soldiers and presented them with Purple Heart and combat awards.
Corzine spokesman Anthony Coley says the governor also delivered to troops more than 300 letters written by schoolchildren and delivered one-thousand telephone calling cards he purchased himself.
