Lawmaker pitches big tax relief plan; leaders predict modest help

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) – New Jersey legislators are studying how to
make the state pay a huge chunk of a homeowner’s property tax bill.
That’s according to a key New Jersey lawmaker.
Assemblyman John Burzichelli is co-chairman of a special
committee considering whether the state constitution needs to be
amended to bring property tax relief.
He cautions that nothing’s been decided and figures remain
conceptual. But he says lawmakers are mulling having the state pay
from 20 to 50 percent of the property taxes on primary homes.
Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts Junior and Senate President
Richard Codey cast doubts.
Roberts predicts more “modest relief.” Codey questions how
much the state can afford.
Legislators have until November 15th to devise property tax
reform recommendations.

Wind- downs trees, power lines

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) – New Jersey’s largest utility has restored
electricity to several thousand customers and the wind has
subsided.
High winds knocked down numerous trees and power lines
yesterday.
Public Service Electric and Gas says most of its outages were
centered around Lumberton, Princeton and West Orange.
In Warren County, police say a Washington Township couple was
injured when a 150-foot oak fell through their home. David and
Denise Monahan suffered head lacerations.
There were wind gusts as high as 55 miles per hour.

N.J. base already looking for workers with Md. ties

FORT MONMOUTH, N.J. (AP) – Fort Monmouth is recruiting workers
from Maryland.
That’s because many of the post’s military command and research
functions will move to Maryland by 2011.
Recruiters believe college students in Maryland make good job
candidates because they will be more likely to want to follow their
jobs back to Maryland.
The Army base also is seeking students with other connections to
Maryland, including New Jersey natives in Maryland schools or
students in New Jersey originally from Maryland.

Annual ranking says Camden no longer the most dangerous U.S. city

ST. LOUIS (AP) – When it comes to the most dangerous and safest
cities in America, New Jersey has two reasons to celebrate.
Camden is no longer the most dangerous and Brick is considered
the nation’s safest, according to an analysis done by a publishing
company.
The rankings out this morning show Saint Louis has jumped to
first place on the most dangerous list. Camden, which had that
distinction for the past two years in the annual rankings compiled
by Morgan Quitno Press, is now ranked number five.
Camden Mayor Gwendolyn Faison was thrilled to learn her city no
longer topped the rankings, saying yesterday that — quoting here
– “There’s a new hope and a new spirit.”
Meanwhile, the safest city in 2005 was Brick, population about
78-thousand.
