Dinner/Doors: 6pm – Show: 8pm JAMES MADDOCK, the songwriter's songwriter, who's earned the respect of masterful writers such as Bruce Springsteen and Willie Nile, has built his acclaimed legacy on humbly honoring purity of expression. Many albums in his catalog are elegantly spare, conveying his songs and sentiments in the most direct possible way. But for his latest, The Green, the songs guided him into recording the most eclectic, exhilaratingly soulful, and imaginatively produced album in his career. "This is my best album. It's an upbeat record with really strong songs and a lot of surprises," the British transplant reveals. "It all happened really naturally. I just listened to where the songs where going and allowed myself the time to give each one a proper sonic home." The Green truly captures NPR's accolade that "his timeless songwriting style, which seems to draw from great songwriters of every era, conveys quiet confidence and lovely intimacy." Since 1999, James Maddock's boldly vulnerable songwriting, honeyed rasp, and distinct folk and Americana aesthetic have garnered acclaim from icons, peers, and tastemaking outlets like NPR, American Songwriter, Relix Magazine, and CMT Edge as well as having performed with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nile, Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors) and David Immergluck (Counting Crows). He's built a respected international profile through tireless touring. Relix notes: "James Maddock possesses the kind of lived-in, craggy voice that would sound authoritative if he were singing the sports pages. Fortunately, he doesn't need to do that because his compositional skills are a match for his delivery." In England, James was the frontman for the Columbia Records band Wood where he was introduced to a mainstream audience when songs from the group's debut, Songs From Stamford Hill, were prominently featured in the TV hit Dawson's Creek. In 2003, Maddock moved to NYC, and launched his solo career. His 2009 album Sunrise On Avenue C won a New York Music Award for "Best Americana Album," while its follow-up, Wake Up And Dream, ranked among the top albums of 2011 in WFUV's (NYC) Listener Poll. This summer Maddock and his great band will be performing entries from The Green, as well as fan faves and catalogue nuggets. Live, Maddock imaginatively reinterprets his oeuvre to keep it fresh for him and his audience. "I love how songs reveal themselves differently in the live setting," James says. "I'm grateful I have such a large body of work and an audience to share a creative dialogue with…….I feel very lucky." JEFFREY GAINES - With only his voice and a guitar for accompaniment, Harrisburg, PA native Jeffrey Gaines has earned a reputation as a captivating performer, heralded for his soul-searching lyrics and his powerful live performances. The self titled Jeffrey Gaines, the first of his five studio releases garnered four stars from The Philadelphia Inquirer, describing Gaines as "…an ethereal soul…insistent, impassioned, full of self-knowledge." Somewhat Slightly Dazed, and Galore followed. Interview Magazine called Gaines' music "soul-searching" and "refreshingly free of jargon, sentiment or cliché." He later released Always Be to both critical and commercial praise. Featuring his emotional interpretation of "In Your Eyes" and his own soaringly beautiful "Always Be," the album hit #45 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart. The New York Post proclaimed Always Be as "a dozen-song mix…that completely illustrates the depth he is capable of." Gaines' impressive catalogue grew with Toward The Sun, produced by Mitchell Froom (Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, and Crowded House). The Boston Globe declared that "Gaines' soulful, wounded vocals make a case for his being one of pop's finest singers…an artist who deserves far more attention than some of his more hyped, yet less talented peers." Mojo noted, "This established soul-folkie's sexy growl has an underlying edge, making it a memorable album. Heartfelt and unpretentious."
