The Collective Art Tank

529 Bangs Avenue
Asbury Park, NJ 07712

Spotlighting the fine arts in Asbury Park as part of the city's First Saturday festivities, The Collective Art Tank will welcome artists and art enthusiasts to the opening of "References – Painting from the Photograph" at its Bangs Avenue studio on Saturday, April 5. Kicking off at 6:00 p.m., the two-man exhibit will feature photo-inspired paintings by Jimmy Leslie, a resident artist of fine art material brands Liquitex, Winsor & Newton and Conté ŕ Paris, as well as Mike O'Loughlin, a former intern of the brands. Furthering The Collective Art Tank's mission to be a gathering place for artists of all kinds, the opening will boast live reggae-inspired music by artist Steve Burgos. "From Thomas Eakins and Edgar Degas to present day artists, the photograph has been used as a source of reference for painters throughout time. Although artist Mike O'Loughlin and I are both partial to plein air painting, time and logistics often reflect in our artistic manifestations. This exhibit will examine how faithful, yet different, the painted image is to its photographic source," commented Leslie. Sponsored by Liquitex, Winsor & Newton and Conté ŕ Paris, three industry-leading fine art material brands, The Collective Art Tank offers artists and art educators a free studio space to work and teach classes. Leslie and O'Loughlin, two working artists who utilize The Collective Art Tank, aim to raise awareness within the Asbury Park arts community and its surrounding region not only for the arts, but for the benefits associated with The Collective Art Tank. Complimentary fine art material samples, a collaborative work environment and continued art education are amongst such highlights. In addition to "References – Painting from the Photograph," Leslie and O'Loughlin will host a free artist talk at The Collective Art Tank from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 11 to discuss specific pieces in the exhibit as well as the inspiration behind each. Also addressed in the discussion will be the difficulties of painting on location versus from a photographic reference, as well as color and medium preferences. The opening of "References – Painting from the Photograph" will be celebrated from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 5 at The Collective Art Tank in Asbury Park and will be on display through April 30.
