On Saturday, October 26, 2013, Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, together with the Claudio Reyna Foundation, will host For a Healthy Harlem, an event designed to fight diabetes among at-risk communities by educating children and their families about preventive care, proper nutrition, and living an active lifestyle. The event will be held at the SCAN Johnson Center from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. and will feature free activities, including: •Physical fitness sessions and soccer drills led by former US National Soccer Team star Claudio Reyna as well as parents vs. children soccer matches •Healthy eating cooking demonstration by celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson •Education stations informing kids and parents about: o Diabetes o Prevention and Management o Treatment and Medication Compliance Education o Resources • Clinical screenings and hands on education stations for children and caregivers •Special appearance by an action hero •Face painting station, photo booth, DJ, and more Diabetes is a disease that affects more than 25.8 million children and adults in the United States. Among ethnic communities, Hispanics and African Americans are disproportionately affected, with Hispanic/Latino Americans 1.7 times and African Americans 1.8 times more likely to have diabetes than non-Hispanic whites.
