The Community YMCA is celebrating Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 27 with a free community event for kids and families at six locations across Monmouth County. The Y looks at Healthy Kids Day as a kick-off to helping parents get a jump on creating a healthier summer, a time when kids are most prone to being sedentary. Healthy Kids Day, a national initiative of the Y to improve the health and well-being of children, will include a host of physical and educational activities designed to inspire kids and families to stay physically and intellectually active all summer long. Research shows that kids are more prone to gain weight and fall behind academically during the summer months if they are not engaged in activities that stimulate the mind and body. Healthy Kids Day will include activities such as engaging games, music, dance, storytime, arts projects, gardening, a family walk, safety talks, wellness activities, and healthy snacks. Community partners include The Junior League of Monmouth County, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, the Visiting Nurse Association, local fire and police departments and more. Activities will vary by location as follows: 9-11:30 a.m., Red Bank Family Health and Wellness Center Junior League "Kids in the Kitchen" activities, learn about nutrition with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ, and take a community walk through Red Bank. 9 a.m. -12:00 p.m., Camp Zehnder in Wall Township Healthy habits for busy families with Food Fit, learn bike and helmet safety, try an obstacle course, and take a camp tour. 9:30-11:30 a.m., Hillside Community Center in Middletown Nature activities with Poricy Park, puppets, storytime, create healthy snacks, learn bike and helmet safety, and more. 12-3 p.m., Camp Arrowhead in Marlboro Healthy snacks and nutrition with Health Food Academy, learn about good dental habits with Dr. Young from Colts Neck Center for Orthodontics, try an obstacle course, have fun with Hula Hoops, and take a camp tour. 1-3 p.m., Matawan Children's Achievement Center in Matawan Junior League "Kids in the Kitchen" activities, healthy smiles with Holmdel Pediatric Dentistry, learn about nutrition with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ, learn bike and helmet safety, explore a Matawan fire truck, and take a community health walk. 1-3 p.m., The Junior League of Monmouth County in Rumson "Kids in the Kitchen" nutritional activities, have fun building with Lowe's, learn bike and helmet safety, try cooking for kids and hip hop dance with the Y's Summer Arts Institutes, and more.
