The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central and South Jersey Affiliate is shedding light on breast cancer awareness through the entire month of October, and to help raise funds for this pressing cause, the organization will be holding Art for the Cure, an art show and sale in Pier Village on Saturday and Sunday, October 20th and 21st. To kick off this exciting event, there will be an art opening and reception on October 5th from 5 to 7 pm at McLoone's Pier House in Long Branch, NJ. The art opening and reception will feature local artist and author Mike Quon, creative director of Quon Art & Design which creates memorable visual communications, corporate identities and illustration for marketing, advertising and promotion. Mike Quon's artwork has made appearances in gallery and museum exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, and Paris, as well as in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, The New York Times, The New York Historical Society and the US Air Force. At the reception Mike will be displaying his Lighthouse Series of paintings on canvas. "The series will feature New Jersey's lighthouses as a dramatic way to spotlight breast cancer," explained Quon. "Being a favorite subject of mine, lighthouses represent the steadfastness of the human spirit......always there...a guiding light, and able to weather life's harshest storms. Lighthouses are truly our beacon of hope." After graduating from UCLA School of the Arts, Mike launched his career as an art director at J. Walter Thompson and Young and Rubicam before establishing his own design office in New York City 30 years ago. Since then his work has been seen around the world, helping to promote events like the Summer Olympics and build lasting brand identities for consumer products, businesses and nonprofits. Author of two books, Non-Traditional Design and Corporate Graphics, Mike is able to take his design work in many directions with the mission of helping clients stand out from the crowd and tell their story. In addition to the October 5th event, Pier Village is hosting the pink pARTy from 6 -9pm on October 18th at The Bungalow Hotel. Billed as a live art experience, the interactive event will feature painter David Banegas, jeweler Diane Cypser, glassblowing by Anthony Primo of Candy's Cottage in Pier Village, and much more. Tickets are $100 per person and available online at www.komencsnj.org. Art for the Cure will line the walkways of Pier Village on October 20th and 21st, featuring fine arts, dance, music and handmade crafts. The weekend is sponsored in part by Monmouth Medical Center. Vendor opportunities are available for interested artists looking to participate in the Pier Village Goes Pink Art for the Cure show and sale.
