2012 Get to Know Contest Get to Know Your Wild Neighbours! The Get to Know Contest is now open nationally across the United States, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, National Wildlife Federation, Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Wildlife Habitat Council, National Recreation and Park Association, Wildlife Forever, Outdoor Afro, and over fifty other partners from coast-to-coast. On behalf of our partners, Get to Know invites all American youth (19 and younger) to get outdoors and "get to know" their wild neighbours. The Contest, now in its 13th year in Canada, encourages young people to develop a deeper appreciation for their neighbours of other species by getting outdoors and creating art, writing, digital photography, videos and music. The goal of the contest is to engage the power of art to help youth feel more connected with nature. It's all about making connections with other environmentally passionate youth, using the creative arts to convey their passion, and having their accomplishments celebrated. We invite youth to Connect…Create …and Celebrate! with the Get to Know Contest. The theme of the 2012 Get to Know Contest is "Get to Know Your Wild Neighbours" in keeping with founder Robert Bateman's belief that caring for our environment begins with knowing the names of our neighbours of wild species. Whether your environment is a single tree in a backyard or acres of boreal forest in a national park, the contest offers youth the opportunity to learn about and celebrate their local biodiversity. Winners will receive all kinds of wild prizes, including an invitation to the week-long Get to Know Art & Nature Camp supported by Parks Canada, and the chance to have their entry published in the 2013 Get to Know Calendar. The contest is now open and runs until July 16. We hope youth will visit their local National Forests, Parks, Zoos, Aquariums, Museums, Botanic Gardens (...anywhere wildlife can be found!) to get inspired and get involved.
