The Manasquan Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) will host its 57th "Friendly Fair" event – part flea market, part old time church fair – on Saturday, July 13 from 8:30 a.m. til 3 p.m., rain or shine. This annual event features antiques, home made baked goods, and a flea market, as well as breakfast and lunch, corn on the cob, games for kids and a live bluegrass band. Since the 1950s the Manasquan Quakers have hosted this event annually, attracting hundreds of rummage-sale bargain-seekers and antique hunters. The effort involves the sweat equity of more than 50 volunteers, who raise the tents, display the merchandise, fry the burgers, and tune up the mandolin. For certain customers, the day's biggest excitement is the flea-market hunt. The fair's merchandise includes books, clothing, jewelry, toys, housewares, kitchen goods, furniture, tools, electronics, and more, with bargains on everything. Some items sold at recent fairs were genuinely old – stoneware crocks, dolls with china heads, opera records, even a red concertina – and some were just used, like the hexagonal wrench sets, lamps and bookshelves that found grateful new owners at low, low prices. Other attenders come to the fair each year for the low-key old fashioned ambience of freshly boiled corn on the cob and bluegrass music under the trees. This event will take place at the Quaker Meetinghouse at 2257 Meetinghouse Road at the Rte. 35 traffic circle in Manasquan. For more information, visit www.manasquanquakers.org.
