The Holmdel Theatre Company will present "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by William Shakespeare opening on July 19th and running through August 3rd, 2013 at the Duncan Smith Theater in Holmdel, NJ. "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is one of Shakespeare's more ambitious works to produce and therefore is not often seen. The cast is large, the characters diverse and the setting mythic. The plot explores love's follies among humans and fairies alike through the conventions of dreams and magic spells. It is not unusual for Shakespearean projects to be reinterpreted through the fresh perspective of modern day, and the Holmdel Theatre Company production is no exception. Bedfellows meet Goodfellas in this unique twist on Shakespeare's classic comedy. The play's "daytime world" is ruled by order and power, and in this production that structure is found in an organized crime family, not unlike the Sopranos. In contrast, nighttime brings forth the mischief and mayhem of the fairy world. These sprites are depicted as lost club kids, who exist in a world where, by night, they can be anyone they want to be. "In addition to being a very funny comedy," said director Gary Shaffer, "A Midsummer Night's Dream' is one of Shakespeare's most accessible plays. Audiences of all ages can relate to its themes, so it is the perfect play for parents to introduce their children to the world of classic theater. I have been working on this interpretation for over two years. Many people update Shakespeare in bits and pieces, but the trick is to make a new rendition work 100% of the time." "A Midsummer Night's Dream" will open on Friday, July 19th and play for eight performances on the following dates: Friday, July 19 at 8pm, Saturday, July 20 at 8pm, Sunday, July 21 at 2pm; Friday, July 26 at 8pm, Saturday, July 27 at 8pm, Sunday, July 28 at 2pm; Friday, August 2 at 8pm, Friday and Saturday, August 3 at 8pm. All performances are at the Duncan Smith Theater, 36 Crawfords Corner Rd., Holmdel, New Jersey in front of the Holmdel High School. Ticket prices are $22 general public ($17 for seniors and $12 for students). Reservations may be made by calling the box office at (212) 868-4444 or via the website at www.holmdeltheatrecompany.org.
