December 02nd, 2008 - Writing Local History - Panel Discussion

Tuesday, December 2, 7:30 pm
'Writing Local History' a panel discussion at Middletown Township Main Library, 55 New Monmouth Rd., Middletown

Monmouth County has a fascinating history, from Penelope Stout, one of the first European settlers to reach the east coast in the 17th century to war heros from the 17th century through the current conflict in Iraq. It was the summer home of seven different presidents, a center for farming and for commercial fishing for many years, a tourist destination and a commuting suburb. Monmouth County history has long been a favorite topic for historians and authors.

On Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7:30 pm, Middletown Township Public Library will present a panel of four prominent local historians. Randall Gabrielan will lead a discussion with Joseph Bilby, George Joynson, and John King. With more than 40 published books among them, these four authors will offer insights into many different areas of writing and publishing, from choosing and researching a subject to finding a publisher and picking a cover.

Before and after the discussion, authors will sell and sign their books, just in time for holiday giving. Their most recent titles include: Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey, Randall Gabrielan, 2008; Sea Girt, New Jersey, Joseph G. Bilby, 2008; Murders & Mayhem in the Highlands, John P. King, 2008; and Murders in Monmouth: Capital Crimes from the Jersey Shore, George Joynson, 2007.

Gillian Grassie (say: Jillian Grass-y) is a contemporary harpist/singer-songwriter whose signature brand of alt/pop has been described by trend-spotting music magazine Origivation as “music that is sure to haunt you like a reassuring and melodious ghost.' Her distinctive vocal approach, paired with a remarkable ability for storytelling, makes her first full-length recording, Serpentine, 'a treat,' says Philadelphia City Paper.
The Bobs are four dynamic personalities whose performance is part theatre, part comedy, part performance art, but most of all—a unique evening of music. A contemporary a cappella group, the Bobs are a 'band without instruments' using just their voices and body percussion to fill the theatre with an orchestra of harmonious sound, accompanying themselves on songs that range from soulful to satire, from amazing to moving, from familiar to unimaginable. Don’t miss this incredible live show of witty, tuneful, original material and outrageous covers of classic holiday songs!
