Press Release
The Shrewsbury Chorale announces the second concert of its 2023-2024 season, "Basically Bach,” conducted by Music Director Fiona Smith Sutherland. We will bring our joyful, beautiful harmonies to this brilliant repertoire.
The concert will be held Saturday, March 16, 2024, 7:00 pm, in the Earth Room of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Monmouth County (UUCMC), 1475 West Front St., Lincroft, NJ.
Our program features “Jesu, meine Freude” (Jesus my Joy), BWV 227, at 11 movements “the longest and most musically complex of Johann Sebastian Bach’s motets”.
We will also sing other well-known selections from Bach, along with works by other Baroque composers including Heinrich Schütz. Leaving the Baroque, we trace Bach’s influence on later composers, singing using two well known motets by Felix Mendelssohn, Verleih uns Freiden, and Psalm 43. Bach’s influence continues with the beautiful Lass Dich, by Brahms. We will conclude with the final movement of Haydn’s Creation , “The Heavens are Telling.”
We will be accompanied on piano and organ by accompanist Kathleen Healy-Wedsworth, and by (string) Quintet Classique led by concertmaster Susan Honey Heerema. Soloists, Jacqueline Quirk and Douglas Clark will also be featured.
Most parking is in the lot behind UUCMC. Surest ADA access, though, is in front, where there are also handicapped-only parking spaces.
Tickets are $25, $20 for seniors and students, and $10 for children. We encourage advance ticket sales. You may buy tickets on our website (shrewsburychorale.org). From our red menu bar select CONCERTS, then PURCHASE TICKETS, then page down to the ticket buttons. Your purchased tickets will await you at the door.
